Burg Hohenwerfen takes you back to the 11th century. A visit includes a guided tour through the castle, a musically lit exhibition on the building history, interactive temporary exhibitions and the historic Landesfalkenhof with daily birds of prey demonstrations. There are also a knights' shop, a castle tavern, changing events and a puzzle rally for children. During the guided tour an audio guide is available, for children in German, English, Dutch, Italian, Danish and Hebrew and for adults in English, Italian, French, Dutch, Czech, Spanish, Russian, Hungarian, Danish, Hebrew and Arabic.
Three permanent exhibitions are new. From 2026 there is an exhibition on the ground floor of the Zeughaus about life at the castle and the castle history. In the Pumpengewölbe an exhibition can be seen about Burg Hohenwerfen as an NS-Gauschulungsburg (1939-1945), and in the newly opened Binderturm the historic fire brigade equipment is on display.
The castle is open from 1 April up to and including 8 November 2026. In April, October and November Monday is a closed day, except on public holidays.
A lift runs up to the castle; there are tickets with and without the lift.
What visitors say
The fortress stands high above Werfen and is reached by a steep path or by the inclined lift; many visitors mention that lift as part of the outing in itself. The most frequently named highlight is the daily birds of prey show by the Salzburg falconry, with eagles, vultures and owls against the mountain backdrop. There is also an interactive exhibition on castle building, weapons and the medieval prison system, with a separate audio guide and a treasure hunt for children. Part of the visit is outdoors and some sections, such as the bell tower, are less suitable for anyone with a fear of heights.
- · Time your arrival around the birds of prey show; for most visitors that is the main part.
- · It is possible to walk up or to take the inclined lift; the footpath is steep.
- · Sturdy shoes and rainwear, as a large part of the visit takes place outdoors.
