The Felberturm Museum in Mittersill is housed in a residential and defensive tower from the first half of the 12th century and has been open again since July 2021 after a thorough renovation. The permanent display deals with the trade using pack animals over the Tauern, the history of Mittersill including the witch trial, and the daily life of the farmers in the adjoining farmhouse. A good choice for a day without mountain weather.

The Felberturm was built in the first half of the 12th century and served the noble free lords of Velm as a residential and defensive tower. In 1415 the tower passed to the Salzburg archbishops and in 1470 it was converted into a store for grain levies. In 1812 the building, which stands out for its herringbone masonry, was auctioned by the Bavarian government and came into private hands; in 1936 it became municipal property. In 1963 the Felberturm was repaired in order to house a regional museum in it.

Between 2019 and 2021 the Felberturm Museum was newly arranged and thoroughly renovated. The museum has been open to visitors again since 7 July 2021.

On the ground floor stands the exhibition on the Saumhandel, the transport of goods with pack animals. The various routes over the Tauern and the stories of the Säumer are shown there with modern museum means. Alongside the basic equipment of the Säumer, an unusual weather station can be seen that surprises visitors.

On the first floor the history and development of Mittersill are covered, from Bannmarkt to town status. Attention is given to the administration of justice and to the relationship between the population and the authorities. The remarkable witch trial of Mittersill has been worked out historically and can be seen on film. Mittersill as an early centre of the iron and leather crafts is also covered, as are the Lebzelterei and the many inns and guest houses for which the place is known to this day.

The adjoining farmhouse shows the daily life of the farmers, who were often Säumer as well. The former school building from 1609 serves as an education room and play workshop.

What visitors say

Not a large museum but a small site with several buildings: the medieval tower, a farmhouse, a schoolhouse and a fire station shed. Visitors are positively surprised by how much is gathered in a small space, from tools and folk art to minerals and regional history; children tend to linger longest at the mineral display case. English information is available, but limited; the staff supplement it verbally. It is regularly mentioned as a usable option for a rainy day.
