The villa on the Traun in Bad Ischl where the composer Franz Lehár worked. He wrote 24 operettas here, among them Die lustige Witwe, Paganini and Giuditta. A visit is mainly of interest to those with a connection to music or operetta.
Franz Lehár felt at home in his villa on the Traun in Bad Ischl and said of it that the best melodies came to him here. 24 of his operettas were written in Bad Ischl. Among his most important works are Die lustige Witwe, Paganini and Giuditta.
What visitors say
The villa has deliberately not been laid out as a classic museum: no display cases, no cordons, which makes the house feel as though the occupant has just stepped out. Visitors mention above all the atmosphere of around 1900 and the interior with a great deal of Hungarian art and objects; the dark side of Lehár's history in the 1930s and 1940s is also part of the account. Entry is only possible on a guided tour in small groups, so it has to be planned into the day. It is mainly worthwhile for those with an interest in operetta or in the history of Bad Ischl.
- · The villa can only be visited on a guided tour and the groups are small; do not turn up on the off chance.
- · There are tours on which his grand piano is played; it is possible to ask about those.
