In seventeen rooms you gain an insight into the landscape and life in the Lungau, religion, the many customs and more. Old objects are shown with modern presentation techniques, which draws attention to the particularities of the region: its own settlement and farmhouse forms, or old tools such as those of the Sauschneider, who lived mainly in the Lungau. There is much to learn about work and life on the alpine pastures. A place of its own is taken by the mineral exhibition, which stands out for the variety and the beauty of the pieces.
What visitors say
The museum is housed in Burg Mauterndorf and is walked through as part of the castle visit with an audio guide, which is also available in a children's version. Visitors advise setting aside at least two hours: about an hour for the tour and as much again for the other rooms and the tower, which is climbed by way of original wooden staircases. For children the dressing up, the cellar rooms and the playground are the draws; anyone coming mainly for the collection on Lungau customs, minerals and traditional dress has to set the pace themselves.
