- Wedding venue for about 60 people
The Stille-Nacht-Museum in the Pflegerschlössl deals with the life and work of the poet Joseph Mohr (1792-1848), who spent the last eleven years of his life as a vicar in Wagrain, and with the worldwide spread and effect of the song Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht. The song connects across the boundaries of faiths and continents and is about the need for peace and reflection.
The Pflegerschlössl was built in 1794 for the highest archiepiscopal administrator. The building withstood political and social upheavals and served as an administrative and court building, school, bell foundry, smithy and dwelling house, and finally became a museum.
Civil marriages are also conducted in the Pflegerschlössl. The venue is barrier-free and has room for about 60 people.
What visitors say
The restored Pflegerschlössl receives more praise from visitors than the average village museum: the exhibition is not only about the origins of the song, but also about Joseph Mohr's years in Wagrain and about the Christmas customs of the region. People usually set aside one to two hours for it and call it a good way to fill a rainy day. Criticism concerns mainly the limited English information and the poor signposting for those arriving on foot.
- · Allow for at least an hour; anyone who really looks at every floor will need longer.
- · Mainly suitable in bad weather, as an alternative to the mountains.
- · Non-German speakers miss part of the texts; a translation app can be worth bringing.
