In the museum you encounter 4,000 years of mining history in Mühlbach am Hochkönig. Finds from the Bronze Age through to the innovations of the modern era are on show. Of particular note is the mineral room with a detailed replica of the oldest known star map, the Himmelsscheibe von Nebra.
There is also a separate exhibition section on the skiing icons from Mühlbach am Hochkönig, with a good deal of regional history.
What visitors say
The guided tour and the Schaustollen with the mine railway are what visitors mention most; in their view the explanation of five centuries of copper mining comes across as knowledgeable and committed. Set against that, the museum itself is described by some as old-fashioned and dated. An English-speaking visitor ran into the fact that everything is in German. It is regularly mentioned as a programme for a rainy day; allow about two hours.
- · Allow about two hours for the museum plus the Schaustollen.
- · Without German a large part of the explanation is lost.
