In winter the Gasteiner Bergbahnen open up Skigastein with 180 kilometres of pistes up to 2,650 metres, and in summer three mountains in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. The Schlossalm is aimed at families with playgrounds and a motor skills park, the Stubnerkogel at views with a suspension bridge and platforms, and the Graukogel at walking. It is useful to decide in advance which mountain suits your day.
- Schlossalm is the family mountain, with playgrounds and a motor skills park
- Stubnerkogel has the suspension bridge, viewing platforms and the Felsenweg
- Graukogel is the quietest choice, aimed at walking
In winter Skigastein offers 180 kilometres of pistes up to an altitude of 2,650 metres, with descents of more than 1,000 vertical metres. The Skischaukel Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel connects two ski mountains and the towns of Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein. There are Skimovie race courses, a funline, a snowpark and the valley run Die Nord. The Sportgastein ski area is high alpine and has freeride routes and wide slopes. For beginners there is the GASTI Park in the Skizentrum Angertal, with a practice area, ski school and a mini Skimovie.
In summer the mountains are aimed at families, walkers and nature lovers, in the middle of the mountain landscape of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. The Schlossalm in Bad Hofgastein has adventure playgrounds, a motor skills park, climbing facilities and summits with views. The Stubnerkogel at the foot of Bad Gastein is a viewing mountain with a suspension bridge, viewing platforms, the Felsenweg and many photo spots. The Graukogel in Bad Gastein is aimed at walking, with the Zirbenzauber circular walk, mountain lakes and walking routes.
What visitors say
The summer lifts of the Gasteiner Bergbahnen bring visitors above 2,000 metres without any climbing; the Stubnerkogelbahn is the best known of them. At the top there are short circuits, viewing platforms and the suspension bridge, and longer walks start from there as well, such as the one towards the Zitterauer Tisch. Those who set aside a whole day get more out of it than those who only go up and come straight back down; one walker who spent five hours there found that on the tight side. The suspension bridge has a grating floor that can be seen through, which not everyone (and not every dog) finds pleasant.
- · Take enough water: apart from the mountain hut there are hardly any refill points.
- · Check in advance whether the Felsenweg is open, as that path can be temporarily closed.
- · Dogs are allowed in the gondola and are welcome at the hut at the top.
