- separate interactive exhibition Kelten für Kinder, from excavation to chariot race
The Keltenmuseum Hallein is one of the largest museums for Celtic history and art in Europe. The prehistory of Salzburg and the town history of Hallein are covered here as well. Walk-through mine galleries, views into burial chambers and finely worked gold jewellery show the art and culture of the Celts.
What do archaeologists do? How do objects end up underground? What is left of them? How old is it? These and other questions about archaeology and the world of the Celts are central to the interactive exhibition Kelten für Kinder. Everything from excavation to chariot race is covered.
What visitors say
The museum is spread over several floors: on the first, salt extraction and the excavations on the Dürrnberg with the so-called man in the salt and the Schnabelkanne, above that the Prunkräume from the time of the archbishops. Visitors report that a single visit does not leave enough time and that the upper floors are left out. The building has been renovated, with a new entrance and stairwell, and there is a separate route for children. Anyone with little interest in archaeology will find it a solid classical museum rather than an experience.
- · Allow plenty of time, otherwise the upper floors get skipped.
- · For children there is a separate museum guide.
