Salt mine inside the Dürrnberg near Hallein: in by mine train, down long wooden miners' slides and across the underground salt lake by raft, past the only underground national border between Austria and Germany. Above ground lies the Kelten.Erlebnis.Berg with the SALINA Celtic village, a salt manufactory and a themed playground. Allow half a day; children are admitted from the age of 4, and sturdy shoes and warm clothing are needed.

- Bring sturdy shoes and warm clothing, it is cold underground
- Sally's children's tour is not covered by the SalzburgerLand Card
The visit begins with a ride on the mine train deep into the Dürrnberg. Fast wooden slides and passages lead down to the heart of the mountain. A journey through four eras leads from the modern mining and salt production of today via the Baroque period to the Middle Ages and finally to the Celtic miners. The raft trip across the salt lake ties in with Baroque Salzburg. Along the way the only underground national border between Austria and Germany is passed.
Kelten.Erlebnis.Berg
Above ground as well, the subject is the significance of salt. The SALINA Celtic village, the new salt manufactory and a themed playground can be explored with the Salzwelten app, which offers virtual adventure games and an AR function.
Salt manufactory
On the site of the old Solestube stands a modern show saltworks on the Kelten.Erlebnis.Berg. There visitors see how the hand-scooped BAD ISCHLER gourmet salt is produced from the natural brine of the Dürrnberg. The Pfannmeister explains the process on the spot and talks about his work.
SALINA Celtic village
Large parts of the Dürrnberg were already inhabited from 600 BC onwards. The extraction of and trade in the white gold brought prosperity to the population in the Iron Age. Archaeologists have so far excavated and scientifically documented some 400 graves and many remains of settlements. Rich grave finds such as the well-known Schnabelkanne, gold jewellery, weapons and everyday objects can be seen in the Keltenmuseum Hallein. The reconstructed SALINA Celtic village gives an impression of how the Celts lived 2500 years ago and has been laid out according to current scientific understanding in cooperation with the researchers of the Keltenmuseum Hallein.
Sally's children's tours
Sally, the mine duck, takes children along every Sunday at 14:30: she tells them about salt, shows them secret passages and joins them on the old miners' slides. Please note: Sally's children's tours are not free of charge with the SalzburgerLand Card.
Highlights: two long miners' slides, a boat trip across the underground salt lake, the mine train, the Kelten.Erlebnis.Berg with Celtic village and salt manufactory, the free Salzwelten app with a treasure hunt and additional digital information, and audio guides in fourteen languages.
Important: children may visit the Salzwelten from the age of 4. Remember sturdy shoes and warm clothing.
What visitors say
The visit lasts about an hour and a half and follows a fixed guided tour: into the mountain on a mine train, down two wooden slides and across an underground salt lake on a raft with a light and sound show. The slides are the highlight for most families; young children sit in front of a guide. The temperature is constantly around ten degrees, which works out pleasantly on a hot day but is underestimated by many visitors. The mine is not accessible for wheelchair users, and photography is barely possible in the dark passages.
- · Put a warm layer on under the overall that is provided; underground it stays around ten degrees.
- · Wear sturdy shoes, the ground underfoot is uneven.
- · Take the group photograph before the descent; in the tunnels it is too dark.
