Cable car from Grödig/St. Leonhard (456 m) to the Geiereck top station (1,776 m) on the Untersberg, covering 1,320 metres of altitude difference in 8.5 minutes. At the top there is a view of the city of Salzburg, the Berchtesgadener Land and the Rosittental, and walks in the high mountains start here. The valley station lies about 10 km south of Salzburg and can be reached by bus or trolleybus.

The Untersbergbahn, a Salzburg institution

The Untersberg is one of the most popular recreation areas of the city of Salzburg. Since 1961 the Untersbergbahn has taken walkers, winter sports enthusiasts, nature lovers and admirers of panoramic views up and down the mountain. Between the valley station in Grödig/St. Leonhard (456 m) and the Geiereck top station (1,776 m) there is 1,320 metres of altitude difference.

The panorama of the Untersberg

The ride in one of the two spacious cabins takes 8.5 minutes. On the way there is already a view of the city of Salzburg, the Berchtesgadener Land and the Rosittental. In good visibility even the lakes of the Salzkammergut and the Chiemsee can be made out in the distance.

The Untersbergbahn in figures

The valley station in Grödig/St. Leonhard lies about 10 km south of Salzburg and can be reached by buses 25 and 28 and by trolleybus line 5. The cable car was built between 1958 and 1961 and has been modernised continuously since then. Each cabin holds 50 passengers.

Good to know

The top station lies in the high mountains. Suitable clothing, sturdy footwear and careful behaviour are necessary. Managed parking applies in the area around the valley station.

What visitors say

The aerial tramway takes about eight to nine minutes and sets you down at just over 1700 metres, close to Salzburg. The weather determines everything here: visitors warn that in cloudy conditions almost nothing is visible from the top, whereas in clear weather it gives a very long view. From the mountain station it is about half an hour of climbing over rocky terrain to the Gipfelkreuz, and flat walks on the plateau take one to two hours. Allow two to three hours for a visit, and expect clearly lower temperatures than in the city.
