Museum in Fürstenbrunn about the Untersberg, the local mountain of Salzburg, with marble, folk customs and water as its main themes. On display are, among other things, the masks and costumes of the Wilde Jagd. The marble ball mill belongs to the museum, where marble balls are made using water power.

One mountain, many stories

The Dalai Lama called the Untersberg the heart chakra of Europe. Sagas and legends surround the mountain to the south of the city: Emperor Karl is said to be waiting there for his final battle before the end of the world. The old mythical figures of the Wilde Jagd also belong to this massif. The museum shows the masks and costumes of this company, which appears every year on the second Thursday of Advent.

The marble of the Untersberg

Many buildings in the city are made of Untersberg marble, the best-known example being the Salzburger Dom. Quarrying in Fürstenbrunn has been documented for centuries.

On water, balls and caves

The drinking water of the city of Salzburg comes largely from the Untersberg. It makes its way through underground cave systems to the springs at the foot of the mountain. In the marble ball mill, which belongs to the Untersbergmuseum, coloured marble balls are still made using water power. In the past these served as toys, as ballast for ships or as cannonballs.

What visitors say

This is a small regional museum about the Untersberg itself: the marble quarrying, the legends surrounding the mountain and local customs. Visitors mention above all the large scale model of the mountain and the old photograph collection as the parts that stay with them, and are notably positive about the staff who provide the explanations. It is a destination for anyone who wants to understand something of the region and of stonemasonry, not for anyone expecting a large museum.
