Gorge in the heart of the Tennengau where the Lammer has cut deep into the rock. Secured paths and bridges lead above the churning water along steep rock faces. Shortly after the starting point in Oberscheffau lies the Dunkle Klamm, the finest section.
- the starting point is in Oberscheffau
- secured paths and walkways, suitable for young and old
Churning water, steep rock faces, deep clefts and surprising views: that is the Lammerklamm in Scheffau. Secured paths and walkways lead the whole family safely through the gorge in the heart of the Tennengau.
Even before the ice age the Lammer wore a narrow notch valley into the mountain. When the glaciers melted thousands of years ago, enormous masses of water flowed into the valley and carried the rock away bit by bit. This is how the Lammerklamm came about. The gorge is a telling example of the eroding power of water.
Since 1884 the Lammeröfen have also been accessible to visitors. From the starting point in Oberscheffau, secured walkways run along the rock faces and over the churning water, so that young and old can get through safely. Shortly after the entrance you already reach the section called the Dunkle Klamm, the finest part of the Lammerklamm.
What visitors say
A short gorge walk in which more than a hundred steps lead down to the so-called dark klamm, the narrowest and most impressive section. Technically it is simple, but there are many wooden steps and tree roots, so a sure footing helps. Opinions differ: the green water and the limestone walls receive much praise, while others find the visit short for what it costs. As a destination on its own it is on the thin side; in combination with something else in the Tennengau it comes off better.
- · Sturdy shoes: the wooden steps and roots are slippery when damp.
- · Not manageable with a pushchair because of the number of steps.
- · Plan something else in the area alongside it, otherwise the drive there is long for the time spent.
