The Museum der Moderne Salzburg in the Rupertinum lies in the middle of the Altstadt and shows international temporary exhibitions on 700 square metres, with good conditions for prints and photography. The early baroque building is recognisable by the tongue beards by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The study centre of the Generali Foundation is also based here.

The history of the house
The house in its prominent place between the Franziskanerkirche and the Kollegienkirche was already mentioned in documents in 1350. Under Archbishop Paris Lodron the palace served as the Collegium Rupertinum, a place of training for students for the priesthood. Until 1974 the Rupertinum was used as a hall of residence for pupils and students.
A museum of modern art
In 1983 the building was opened to the public as the Salzburger Museum für moderne Kunst und Graphische Sammlung. The rooms have been adapted over the years and offer particularly good conditions for prints and photographic work. In 2016 a major rebuilding followed and the Generali Foundation Studienzentrum moved into the Rupertinum.
Generali Foundation
The collection of the Generali Foundation consists of about 2,100 works by 250 well-known artists and is among the largest private collections in Austria. The extensive archives, the library and parts of the collection have been brought together with the collection of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg as a long-term loan and can be consulted free of charge.
Fotosammlung des Bundes
Photography has been collected at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg since 1981. Initially the collection of the province and the acquisitions for the Austrian ministry were managed in parallel; since 2013 the federal collection has been called Fotosammlung des Bundes am Museum der Moderne Salzburg and comprises about 12,000 titles.

What visitors say
The Rupertinum is the small site of the Museum der Moderne, in the middle of the Altstadt, with changing exhibitions and a lot of photography. The verdict therefore depends heavily on what is on show: some find it compact and stimulating and appreciate the historic building, others were back outside within ten minutes because in their view there was little to see. For anyone with no affinity for modern art, it is not an obligatory stop.
