Schloss Ritzen in Saalfelden houses a local heritage museum with 24 sections on the history and life of the region. Permanent subjects are a large nativity scene exhibition, sacral treasures with folklore objects, mineralogy and geology, the Roman wall and ceiling paintings of Saalfelden and work by Gottfried Salzmann. There are also changing special exhibitions.

In 1964 the municipality of Saalfelden bought Schloss Ritzen with the plan of setting up a local heritage museum within the historic walls. In the years that followed the building was renovated and extended in stages and the individual sections were fitted out by the museum association. The museum, one of the most important in the province, now shows in 24 sections many valuable pieces on the history and life of the region, on religious folk art, mineralogy and geology.

Several thematic areas have been set up around the history of Saalfelden: a large nativity scene exhibition, sacral treasures with folklore objects, the Roman wall and ceiling paintings of Saalfelden and the exhibition on Gottfried Salzmann. There are also changing special exhibitions.

What visitors say

Visitors call this a surprisingly solid regional museum for such a small place; the nativity scene collection and the Celtic deer figure are mentioned most often. The labels are largely in German, with varying English explanation, so that readers without German miss part of the context. There is criticism as well: the castle is hired out for private functions, and rooms can then be closed off while the full admission is still charged.
