The Museum Tauernbahn in Schwarzach is about the railway line that has connected Schwarzach-St. Veit station with Spittal-Millstättersee in Carinthia since 1905, straight through the Hohe Tauern via the 8.3 km Tauerntunnel. On show are restored objects, rebuilt original trains from more than a hundred years and a model railway with the most important structures of the line.
Since 1905 the Tauernbahn has connected Schwarzach-St. Veit station on the Salzburg side with Spittal-Millstättersee in Carinthia. The railway line crosses the Hohe Tauern via the 8.3 km Tauerntunnel. The museum in Schwarzach is devoted to the history of this railway line and combines permanent exhibitions with rebuilt original trains from more than a hundred years of the Tauernbahn.
The collection consists of restored objects on which visitors can see railway history close up. The most important structures of the Tauernbahn can also be viewed as part of the model railway.
What visitors say
According to visitors, being a railway enthusiast is not a requirement: the museum mainly tells the story of the construction of the Tauernbahn and of the villages around it. The large model railway and the original locomotives are mentioned most often, and children can operate a signal box themselves. Guided tours clearly yield more than walking round on one's own. The number of reviews is small, but they point in the same direction.
- · Ask about a guided tour; visitors get noticeably more out of it than out of a round on their own.
- · With children: the model railway and operating the signal box are what stays with them.
