Leogang is one of the oldest mining places in Salzburg; more than 3,000 years ago the Celts were already extracting ore here. In the Schwarzleotal a guide takes visitors into the medieval Barbara-Stollen, named after the patron saint of miners, where silver, lead, mercury, copper, nickel and cobalt were mined. At the Unterberghaus there are a restaurant and a large adventure playground, which makes it a suitable stop for a family day out.

In summer trained guides lead visitors on foot through the branching tunnel systems. Before or after a visit to the Barbara-Stollen, the Unterberghaus serves Pinzgauer dishes and Austrian specialities. For children there is an extensive adventure playground.
At www.schaubergwerk-leogang.com there is also a virtual tour through the mine, which makes it possible to look around from home.
In winter it is possible to walk through the Schwarzleotal to the Unterberghaus; carriage rides are offered as well.
The guided tours last about an hour and take place from May to October inclusive. In bad weather they run continuously, every 30 to 60 minutes. Groups can have their own tour by arrangement. From November to the beginning of May the show mine is closed. Booking is requested and is possible by telephone or online.

Visitors call precisely that the strongest point: it conveys how cramped and dark the work of the miners was. Physically it is not a stroll, in the Barbarastollen there are some 200 steep steps to climb, and the temperature is seven to eight degrees. Children can come along from about five years old.
