Burg Klammstein at the entrance to the valley is not only the oldest building in Gastein, the earliest settlement of the region also began here. Numerous prehistoric finds point to this. In 1272 a fortress for the protection of the population was built and recorded in writing for the first time. Since then the castle has withstood all historical unrest.
That history is covered in the museum inside the castle. The castle was built in the 13th century and in the early period regularly gave rise to quarrels between the lords of Goldegg, the ruling family, and the Salzburg archbishops as territorial rulers. Those conflicts were not always peaceful.
Later, until into the 16th century, the administration of the mines and the courts were seated here. After that the castle, no longer in use, fell into decay and became a ruin, until a partial renovation began in the 1970s. Today the keep houses a museum on the long history of the castle.
The castle lies about 60 metres above the access road at the entrance to the valley. Guided tours take place according to the schedule on the website. Celebrations and knights' dinners are possible on registration, from 10 people.
What visitors say
Klammstein is small and in private hands, and that determines the experience: visitors are above all positive about the personal tour given by the owner, who has been restoring the castle himself for decades. Opinions on the interior are divided; several visitors call the collection a jumble without a clear line and miss a thematic structure. The visit itself is short, the atmosphere informal, and the view from the tower is often named as the highlight.
- · Allow about half an hour; this is not a half-day outing.
- · Go for the tour and the story, not for a tightly arranged museum display.
