The core of the Domgrabungsmuseum consists of the archaeological finds of a Roman villa. Several walls, architectural elements, channels, hot-air heating systems and original mosaic floors have been uncovered, all of them well preserved.
Besides the remains of this private dwelling house, the foundations and the masonry of the west towers of the Romanesque cathedral can be seen. That cathedral was extended in the late 12th century under Archbishop Konrad III and was demolished after a fire in 1598.
What visitors say
This is a small underground museum beneath the Dom- and Residenzplatz with remains of a Roman villa, mosaic floors, channels and heating pipes, plus foundations of earlier cathedral churches. Visitors find it atmospheric and worthwhile, but keep it short: a quarter of an hour is enough for most. Without explanation or a guided tour it is hard to work out which wall belongs to which building phase. Mainly of interest to those with a leaning towards archaeology or the history of the city, less so as a general outing.
- · Count on a short visit, not on half a morning.
- · With a guided tour or commentary considerably more of what is on view becomes clear.
- · Check beforehand whether it is open: at the time of checking the museum was closed for an extended period and accessible only via guided tours.
