The Lamprechtshöhle is the longest through-cave in the world. With a total extent of 62 kilometres, the cave near St. Martin bei Lofer is among the largest cave systems in Europe. In 1993, Polish cave researchers discovered a further entrance to the cave at an altitude of 2,178 metres, and since then the Lamprechtshöhle has been regarded as the longest through-cave in the world.
In the well-developed section for visitors, about 700 metres of the cave can be explored on accessible stairs and walkways. Over 392 steps, a height difference of 70 metres is covered. From the platform at the top there is a view into the depths of the Lamprechtshöhle. In the middle part of the show cave, a grille door in the Kanzlergrotte separates the visitor section from the research section.
Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are advisable: in the visitor section the temperature is between 4 and 6 degrees all year round.
What visitors say
The cave is fully lit and built out with stairs and bridges along the underground watercourse, so a torch is not needed. It is around five degrees and damp all year round, so a jacket is needed in summer as well. The first part has a low ceiling, which children enjoy and which makes adults stoop. Allow around one and a half hours at an unhurried pace; it is one of the better destinations for a rainy day.
- · Take a jacket, in August as well, and shoes with grip for the wet steps.
- · A pushchair is better left behind; small children in a carrier.
