The Vorderkaserklamm between St. Martin and Weißbach is a gorge 400 metres long and 80 metres deep, which the Ödenbach has been cutting into the rock since the end of the ice age. The route crosses 51 small bridges and 35 stairways with 373 steps in total. Along the way lies the Vorderkaser natural bathing area with bathing ponds and barbecue spots, so the walk combines well with an afternoon outdoors.
- 373 steps spread over 51 walkways and 35 stairways
- The entrance lies about 2.5 kilometres from the B311
- Natural bathing ponds and barbecue spots at Vorderkaser along the way
The Vorderkaserklamm between St. Martin and Weißbach was declared a natural monument in 1977 and has been open to visitors since 1882. When the glaciers of the ice age had melted away 12,000 to 14,000 years ago, the Ödenbach began to grind its way into the hard rock, at about six millimetres a year. The gorge is now 400 metres long and 80 metres deep, up to six metres wide at the top and only 80 centimetres wide at the bottom. The path through the gorge crosses 51 walkways and 35 stairways with 373 steps in total.
The access road is easy to manage by car, bus or bicycle. The entrance to the gorge lies about 2.5 kilometres from the Bundesstraße 311. The walking path runs through the Vorderkaser natural bathing area with natural bathing ponds and numerous barbecue spots.
What visitors say
The gorge runs over wooden walkways with many steps and narrow passages; walking bloggers call it one of the most impressive natural sights in the Saalachtal, but with a substantial climb. For the gorge itself, allow one to two hours with children; the boards stay wet and slippery. Anyone starting at the natural swimming area first walks the Steinzeit-Erlebnisweg with its play stations and bathing spots, and then the day is quickly filled for three hours or more. For very young children and people with a fear of heights the gorge itself is less suitable.
- · Sturdy shoes and a raincoat: the walkways are nearly always wet
- · Pushchairs cannot get through the gorge; the approach along the natural swimming area is buggy-friendly
- · Park at the entrance to the natural swimming area; parking is not allowed along the stretch of road to the gorge
