The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße is a mountain road of 48 kilometres through the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, opened in 1935. Along the way there are visitor centres, exhibitions and museums, huts and mountain restaurants, with a view of the Großglockner and the panorama of three-thousand-metre peaks. The route is driven with your own car or motorbike.

The high mountains around the Großglockner were once accessible only to experienced mountaineers. Since the construction of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße they have been open to young and old. The road was opened in 1935 and has since become wider, safer and more comfortable. Exhibitions and museums, huts and mountain restaurants, visitor centres and information points show the mountain world with its flora and fauna in the middle of the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. The mountain road is 48 kilometres long and follows the contours of the landscape.
The route can be driven by car or by motorbike, with a view of the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria, and of the surrounding panorama of three-thousand-metre peaks.
What visitors say
Forty-eight kilometres with 36 hairpin bends, good road surface and wide curves: the verdict is predominantly positive, and many people regard it as something to have done once. How busy it is depends heavily on the moment. On weekdays and early in the morning you drive almost alone, but on fine summer days between ten and six it fills up with cars, campervans, coaches and a large number of motorcyclists, which makes it less relaxed and, according to some, less safe as well. Opinions on the toll differ: some find the view worth it, others call it an expensive passage.
- · Set off before ten; after that it becomes noticeably busier.
- · Allow two to four hours including stops, not a quick transit.
- · Even in summer it can be cold and snow at the top; take warm clothing.
