The Haus der Natur in Salzburg combines a natural history museum with an aquarium, a reptile and amphibian zoo and an interactive science centre. The exhibitions are spread over eight floors in two buildings. Allow around three hours for a visit.

The many exhibitions in the Haus der Natur are spread over eight floors in two buildings. The main building holds the classic natural history subjects and the animal section. In the Science Center, which is connected by a glass stairwell, everything revolves around investigating and experimenting. Around three hours can be allowed for a visit to the museum.

The exhibitions range from the origin of life in prehistoric times through the development of humankind to the workings of the human body. Further subjects are river landscapes from the surrounding area and distant habitats, the interior of the earth and crystals, the universe, the ice ages, the climate and the changes on earth.

With a total of 64 aquariums and terrariums, the museum also shows living animals. The aquariums contain the underwater world; the reptile and amphibian zoo shows snakes, lizards, tortoises and crocodiles in habitats modelled on nature.

In the Science Center there are interactive stations on three floors for experimenting, with physics and technology as the subjects.

Besides the exhibitions there are regular guided tours, science shows, workshops and excursions for all ages.

What visitors say

Visitors mention the Science Center and the dinosaur and underwater halls in particular as the parts where children linger; many of the displays are meant to be operated by visitors themselves. The museum covers more than 7,000 square metres and an hour is not enough for anyone who wants to see everything: bloggers advise at least half a day. It is a classic rainy-day destination, so in bad weather it becomes noticeably busier, particularly in the Science Center.
