The Museum der Moderne on the Mönchsberg lies high above the roofs of the Salzburg Altstadt and shows modern and contemporary art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries on three levels. The exhibition space covers 2,300 square metres and changes regularly. The building from 2004 is a sight in itself, with glazed stairwells and a facade of Untersberger marble.

Modern art in a prominent place
On an area of 2,300 square metres the museum shows modern and contemporary art of international standing, supplemented by work from its own collection, in changing exhibitions. The exhibition space is purist in design.
Architecture
The Museum der Moderne Salzburg Mönchsberg was designed by the Munich architectural practice Friedrich Hoff Zwink and opened in 2004. Striking features are the glazed stairwells with a view of the nineteenth-century water tower and the cladding of the outer facade with local marble from the Untersberg.
Multimedia guide
A multimedia guide is available through the MuseumStars app (for iOS and Android), with an introduction to art in public space, digital art walks and floor plans, among other things.
What visitors say
The building and the view from the terrace are for many visitors the main reason to come; some admit outright that they came more for the panorama than for the art. Opinions on the exhibitions diverge: enthusiasts of contemporary art are positive, while others find the work hard to place without explanation. Recurring irritations are the separate charge for the lift if no museum ticket is bought, unclear signage and floors that are closed without notice. Allow one to two hours including the terrace.
- · Ask on arrival which floors are open
- · Large bags have to go in a locker
- · With a card that covers admission and the lift, the discussion about the lift fee does not arise
