The Postalmstraße leads up from Abtenau to the Postalm, the largest alpine pasture area in Austria and the second largest high plateau in Europe. At the top it is possible to walk from hut to hut and to eat alpine farm products and regional dishes along the way. The road is a toll road; with the SalzburgerLand Card the drive up is toll-free as often as one likes, but only via the access road from Abtenau.

The Postalm, the largest alpine pasture area in Austria and the second largest high plateau in Europe, is reached without effort via the Postalmstraße. On a leisurely walk from hut to hut, alpine farm products and regional dishes can be eaten along the way.

On the Postalmstraße near Abtenau a toll applies to cars, motorcycles and buses; there is also a half-year ticket. With the SalzburgerLand Card the drive up by bus or in one's own car is toll-free as often as one likes. Note: this applies only on the access road of the Abtenauer Postalmstraße.

What visitors say

The Postalmstraße is a surfaced toll road between the Lammertal and the Salzkammergut that leads to the largest continuous alpine pasture area in Austria. Those who have been there mention above all the view of the Dachstein massif during the descent towards Abtenau and the quiet on the pasture paths, with cows and horses roaming freely. The choice of car park makes a considerable difference in practice: from the more distant ones the way back is a steep climb. The area is barely reachable by public transport, so a car or motorbike is needed.
